Sony's Entry into the Touchscreen PMP market detailed.

We here at DAPreview are quite partial to the current range of Sony DAP's, they're really solid and well equipped players. The news just in is that Sony are aiming to release an iPod Touch / Cowon S9 - esque device.

As SonyInsider reports:

Sony is set to debut a new 16 and 32GB drag and drop Walkman during CES 2009, according to trusted inside sources. This will be the most advanced music, video and photo Walkman music player ever released by Sony to date. While it was revealed before to Wired that Sony’s new Walkman would have Wi-Fi capabilities, we have now learned that Sony’s new Walkman will also be touchscreen and WQVGA

This new device is expected to use an OLED touchscreen, roughly in the 3" range so it could be using the same screen as Cowon's new S9, which certainly wouldn't be a bad thing. The as yet unnamed device will keep with the GUI style of current Sony models but will be adapted and developed to work with the touchscreen. A nifty feature SonyInsider have mentioned is that "upon listening to an artist, you may click on the artist name and watch music videos of the artist on YouTube through Wi-Fi".

As far as Audio codec support goes Sony are sticking to their current setup of MP3, WMA, AAC, PCM, while video codec support is AVC (h.264), MPEG-4 and WMV. Other notable features include a fully functional web browser, a "powerful S-Master digital amplifier" built in, as well as digital noise cancelling. Sony will also included an FM transmitter which we have seen done before but a welcome feature nonetheless.

I'm very excited right now, Sony are our current DAP manufacture to beat when it comes to the overall DAP package, and it seems like they might be building my dream player. We'll learn more about this exciting new player at CES 2009.
