CES 2009: Sandisk's newest player, the slotRadio
comment: 5 | Thursday, January 08 (2009) 02:38PM | Posted by Michael
We're going from one radio to another, but this one isn't as cool as Slacker. Sandisk continues to push their slotMusic format, but I'm still not buying into it. They've announced slotRadio, a card that has a selection of 1,000 top Billboard songs. To go along with those cards, they've also announced the slotRadio. The device is being targeted at casual crowd whom Sandisk believes are too dumb to figure out how to use a regular MP3 players. Here's how they put it in the presser:

"The immediacy of the plug-and-play model offered by the card-plus-player format ushers in a new way for consumers to enjoy music. To date, portable music devices typically required software installations, followed by time-consuming music selection and file-by-file downloading, topped off with cable connections and synchronization....slotRadio dramatically lowers these barriers, offering a genuine alternative to existing options"

Give me a break Sandisk. Isn't that how 99% of your players work? I'm sure people could figure those out in a few minutes. After all that's what a user manual is for. I just love how they mention the consumption of time to select music. As opposed to buying a slotradio card and having no say whatsoever on what's put on it? Yeah, I'd take the former any day. The slotRadio has a 1.5" OLED display, an FM tuner, and no on-board memory. It'll retail for $99.99 when released and come with 1,000 songs pre-loaded on the card. Additional slotRadio cards will also become available in various music genres for a price of $39.99. They'll also work with the Sansa Fuze.

I really hope this isn't the direction Sandisk is heading towards. They still have so much potential in the DAP industry, but their latest examples are making me slap my forehead way too many times.
