Conclusion

Competition

The S Series really has two competitors: Apple's iPod and Creative's ZVM. The S Series are quite similar to the iPod in that they both put simplicity, integration, and size ahead of features while having both 30gb and 60gb versions, however, the S Series does include a FM tuner. The ZVM boasts the most features (particularly recording), best battery life, most customization, however, it is larger and not nearly as stylish. A third competitor could be the Cowon iAudio X5, but it is sort of old and this point and can't really be considered mainstream, though. It does, however, have way more features than the S Series but has an inferior screen, design, and GUI. Every one of the four prospective options are very solid in the 30gb DAP/PMP hybrid range. It really is hard to say one is better than another. All I can say is: do your homework, know what features each player has and does not have, and buy the player that fits what you really need. Also, do not overvalue certain features that you will probably never use.

Value

It is hard to measure the S30's value because one can buy one for a wide range of prices. It retails for $300, and that does not seem like that much of a bargain especially considering that the Creative ZVM retails for the same price and gives you way more features and customization. It should be said though that you get style, simplicity, and a terrific GUI for the money. It really depends what you put emphasis on. If you want more features, for $300, you pretty much have to go with the ZVM, but if you just want tight PC integration and a simple GUI, the S30 will be well worth it. And if you can nab the S30 for $240, like some people have, you should go for it, as it is an absolute steal at that price.

Conclusion

The Toshiba Gigabeat S30 was one of the most hyped players in recent memory. Did it live up to the hype? It really is a hard question, because it did in some respects and failed in others. While the S Series has a fantastic GUI, great controls, and is terrificly stylish, it has miserably battery life and simply lacks any sort of recording features along with minimal codec support. This all makes it really hard to give it a score. Yes, the S series is indeed lackluster for many DAP-enthusiasts, especially on this site, but I cannot ignore how terrific the S series is for its target audience: iPod users.

Thanks a lot, great review. I cant wait until Best Buy or Costco gets this so I can buy it, try it out and make a decision. Im going away on July 2 so hopefully it will be here before then. The two things that I think are so cool about this are a) Digital camera transfer (no need for expensive memory cards, also a form of back up ) and b) its size/sleekness. If only they improved the battery!!

Unfortunately, gaps are clearly noticeable. Before you even ask, gapless WMA is not gapless on the S30. I would estimate the gap to be around 2 seconds which is pretty much average for non-gapless players.

Is there really a full 2 second gap between each track? Even with mp3s? That would be going back to the dark days of the original ipod. It's a total deal breaker for me, there's no way I could listen to mix CDs with 2 seconds between each song.

meh, ill wait till cowon makes a new 30/60gb dap, the only thing this player has is the interface. And Im a ""nerdy" guy so handling non-intuitive daps is easy for me.

Heh I paid $99 for a mp4, not paying more even though this is a beauty I'm waiting for some 3G phones to get cheap and I'll get an all in one!

nice review. whilst reading through the review...i was tempted to buy this product insted of waiting for the new archos products, but that battery life really shoots this player in the foot.....

audio is better than my g400 but videos is poor imo, when a year and a half old product beats it.

.divx and .avi are exactly the same except for the indie movies bought in divx. Just change the extension and it's done ... less work then converting movies 2 times...

Nice review, but you really should work on being less repetative. Additionally, you really can't give it a fair score without testing its Xbox 360 and Windows Media Center specific features, can you?

Overall I found your review interesting and informative, but it really needs some more polish.

benpink,

I guess you could say gaps are unpredictable. Some are 2 seconds (the ones i orginally examined), most are 1/2 second....kinda weird that when i actually test it out it the first time i get weird results. strange.

monkeyninja,

fair enough. Please read the review again in a couple of days. It will far more polished.

XBox 360 connectivity is stupid and useless. Windows PMC specific features like....recorded tv? Yes, thats awesome, but you can sort of do that without Windows Media center software with any player, so not sure how vital it is...will include little section on it and tivo, though.

List of updates so far (will post in a whole new news post when I have finished it completely)

- Additional Features score went up to 70 - when initially considering the score I was thinkiing about some features that are covered in separate sections.

- package contents went to 80 - changed this early on, some of you may not have even noticed.

- Added Radio section

- Updated part on gaps ... sort of strange initial results - my fault, i guess. wasnt thorough enough and shouldve noticed that 2 second gaps is was way too long especially when i didnt even really notice the gaps while on the road.

- small tivo/w mce tv recordings section: once again i am sorry i dont have these things. I really dont think they are significant enough, so I believe I can fairly score this player. I have kept the feature in mind, though.

I noticed a mistake in the review, the Zen Vision didn't use the PMC software, the Zen PMC did.

Quick comment about the gaps - I have the s60 and I noticed that the higher quality music the longer the gap - wma lossless at over 1 second but MP3 at 192k had a much shorter gap

Yes, you got it! I was wondering why I was getting so much inconsistency.

icarusflu... I've been looking for someone with an S60 to maybe help answer a couple questions. Is the fingerprinting on the black really all that bad? I've heard that the black is much more annoying than the white for the S series. Also, does it feel thick to you? I'd like a slim player, but if the few mm aren't really noticable... I guess it's worth the extra 30 gigs. Finally, how does it look overall? All the reviews say the "piano white" is stunning... but the black may look even classier. What do you think?

I found the s30 on radioshack.com for 237.99 but it is out of stock. It was in stock briefly for a few hours a few days ago but since then its been out of stock. You can have them notify you when it comes back in, in case any of you guys want one cheap. Just thought Id put that out there.

Radio Shack is running an online sale on the S30 ($237) and S60 ($322) until July 10. It's the cheapest you'll find it... if you can. It's almost always sold out. I signed up for a reminder-when-it-comes-back-in-stock e-mail yesterday. They restocked a few S30s this morning, but it was sold out within a couple hours.

You may also want to try Amazon.com. I just ordered an S60 from them for $340 today.

After reading so much I'm even more confused, Creative Zen-M, Ipod 5th(30Gb), or Toshiba Gigabeat S (30Gb).

Great review by the way, but does.
93 > 90 > 80 mean,
Vision:M > Ipod (5Gen) > Toshiba Gigabeat S

Would you buy a Toshiba Gigabeat S(30Gb) over an Ipod (30Gb)? WMP11 seems > than Quicktime 7Pro anyways, my 2 cents.

P.s. Radioshack is in stock and has raised their prices $299.99 (30 Gb) and $399.99 (60 Gb)

I own a ZVM, and by reading this nice review, I see no reason why sites such as CNET have rated the Gigabeat higher than the obviously superior ZVM, other than the interface and style. I think this site's reviews are most accurate, thanks for the reviews. By the way, chicubs, Xbox 360 connectivity would be a nice feature for me as I am a very involved gamer and would like to use my future 360 to play my music through my ZVM. I would love to control my ZVM through my 360, but apparently it is not working.

The S30 is disappointing and mediocre in every respect. Got mine 7 days ago and put it on sale after playing around for 3 days. Bought the ZVM meanwhile and simply love it, love it! The ZVM has a significantly superior screen, best in class audio quality, video functionality etc. The S30 is definitely no match for the ZVM and should rather be rated with a "6".

I have this player in 60 gb. I have owned Cowon Sony Creative and Apple players.

I converted to lossless content after getting the Cowon. I have my Cd's all archived to lossless. So going from one format to another is very easy. DBpower Amp makes this seamless.

I use WMP mostly for syncing to the Gigabeat.

WMA lossless files are very small for lossless format when compared to FLAC or Apples Lossless.

Good job Microsoft.

Go buy one give it a try.
