2m54sThere's not an awful lot happening in the DAP industry, these days. Lots of companies are "playing it safe", launching one generic player after the other – others presumably have decided to wait and see where the "storage medium war" is going.

Archos is coming up with new stuff soon enough, the iUbi Blue looks to be quite the attractive PMP (we'll let you know how that turns out) and the MobiBLU US2 & Meizu M6 might hit the right snares as well. But actual, real, touchable & reviewable stuff? Hmm, slim pickings still.


Speaking of Meizu, next to their nano-inspired M6 (a.k.a. "Mini Player"), this Chinese company managed to cough up a whole range of MP3 players over the years. Although most of these DAPs aren't exactly super-exciting to look at, it needs to be said that the Meizu E3, E5 and X6 were pretty solid simple-profile DAPs.

Without letting prejudices get in the way, it's a rather rare phenomenon for a Chinese DAP company to come up with quality material like that; most of them stick to cloning existing concepts (especially Apple's and Samsung's stuff) while trying to keep price levels down to a minimum. The results of such practices are, as was to be expected, often quite disappointing.


Good thing we've got Meizu then, the exception to the above-mentioned rule. We're certainly curious about the M6 ourselves as well, but let's first focus on the e5Cult now. This player has been rebranded by a Czech company called Emgeton, which is why we'll call it the "Emgeton e5Cult" from now on… or just "e5C" or something like that. The friendly people over at Emgeton were nice enough to send one of these babies our way – let's see if it's any good right now.
